Brief Description
The goal of this project is to conduct field testing of new promising varieties of legumes developed by government agencies and seed companies and to generate adequate reliable basic information as basis for variety recommendation.

The purpose are as follows: (1) to evaluate and select promising entries of legumes that is high yielding, disease resistant and acceptable to the farmers; (2) to identify promising entries and to get conclusive results as basis for recommendation to the National Seed Industry Council (NSIC) as national, regional or local variety under specific conditions; and (3) to improve the yield and other characteristics of legumes suited to our local condition.

It involves four studies namely:

  1. Varietal evaluation of promising peanut lines and varieties at MMSU
  2. Varietal evaluation of promising soybean lines and varieties at MMSU
  3. Varietal evaluation of promising mungbean lines and varieties at MMSU
  4. Varietal evaluation of promising ICRISAT peanut genotypes at MMSU for drought tolerant areas
Major Activities include:

  1. Crop establishment/management
    1. Land preparation
  2.
    1. Planting/fertilizing
  3.
    1. Irrigating/spraying
  4.
    1. Weeding/hilling-up
  5.
  6. Data collection/gathering
  7. Harvesting and post harvest operations
  8. Data collation, analysis and interpretation
  9. Writing progress/final report
Project outputs are selected and identified promising lines that are high yielding, disease resistant and acceptable to the farmers and ready to be recommended for approval to the National Seed Industry Council (NSIC) for approval and release for commercial planting.

Target beneficiaries are the peanut, mungbean, and soybean growers, feed millers and processors.

Expected Output
Promising varieties for national, regional or local variety.
