Biography

Ms. Marissa I. Atis is a graduate of Master of Agriculture in 1992, with cognates of Crop Science and Crop Protection. With her appointment as Education Program Specialist I, she works as a researcher in different disciplines such micropropagation studies of high value crops, postharvest technology and organic vegetable production through women's participation.

In her first assignment as a researcher, she worked concerning agricultural crops such as rice and corn (1990-1993). In 1991, however, she was given training on Rapid Multiplication Technique for White Potato using Tissue Culture held at the Institute of Plant Breeding, Los Baños, Laguna. The said training advanced her work in different crop commodities in the area of micropropagation researches, through which different protocols for in vitro propagation were developed specifically for garlic and banana, and later, nursery management techniques to produce clean planting materials. Several awards and recognitions were received in regional and national symposia as one of the best research papers and also published in refereed journals. These researches were on banana specifically on Development of Low-Cost and Rapid Multiplication Technique of Musa Acuminate (AA Group) cv Lacatan Banana; and garlic, 'Development of a Multiplication Technique for Virus-Free Garlic Planting Materials'. Another opportunity for her, came in where, recently, she was able to attend trainings on biotechnology. This provided her to be involved in the conduct of the study ‘Rapid Nucleic Acid Extraction and PCR Detection of Three Significant Banana Viruses in the Philippines’ which was already published in Philippine Journal of Science.

Her involvement in other researches in the past years brought also several significant accomplishments and awards. From 1987 to 2003, she was one of the researchers who led in the Lowland Potato Project; potato, which we may say that potato is a crop only in the highlands of Benguet province, however, technologies such as the development of a new lowland potato variety, Raniag, was successfully done. In 2001-2003, she also worked on pest management studies in vegetable crops such as, Pest management in Vegetable Production: The Case of the Rainfed Lowlands in Ilocos Norte, also published in refereed journal; pest management in mango (1999-2001) where a research paper on Mango  Fruitfly: Population Dynamics and Effectiveness of Bait Trap for Its Control, also published in non-refereed journals.
