For. Charito L. Samsam is a Science Research Specialist II of the Mariano Marcos State University. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Forestry of the same University and her Masters at the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (1991), Bacnotan, La Union specializing in Sericulture. While undertaking her course, she was trained in silkworm breeding and mulberry culture. To foster her interest in expanding her knowledge and skills towards the development of potential crops for biofuel and agri-based industry, she changed her track in the field of agriculture and took up courses in PhD in Crop Production Management. In 2007, she was trained in Plant Genetic Resources Conservation applicable in various crops and plant species.
Research Interests
Ms. Samsam researches various fields particularly in sericulture, biofuel, agroforestry and forestry. She has evaluated various silkworm strains and developed package of technology in sericulture for the semi-arid tropical condition in Northwest Luzon. She was involved in the documentation of community-based resource management practices of forest-users particularly the kaingineros, forest stewards and charcoal and salt-makers of Ilocos Norte. She has worked extensively in biofuel production from Jatropha curcas as an alternative source of energy and explored and assessed the phenological characteristics of promising plant species as a potential source biofuel in Ilocos Norte. As a Forester, she has previously developed rapid propagation of bamboo propagules by branch marcotting and rejuvenation techniques of kauayan tinik clumps. She leads the development of propagation protocol for dipterocarps and other indigenous timber species to increase production and suffice the need of quality planting stocks for the Greening Program of the national government. She was involved in several research projects funded by Asian Development Bank in the Evaluation of DENR Projects, by CHED in Biofuel (Jatropha Research and Enterprise Development Project in Ilocos Norte and by DENR in Establishment of Clonal Nursery for the Production of QPM for indigenous tree species. She has authored three research papers published in refereed journal published in 2012 and 2013 and one in non-refereed journal of MMSU published in 2007.
