Biography

Lorma Matias-Valera is a graduate of Doctor of Education in Educational Management from Mariano Marcos State University. She is Professor IV, Specialization Head of the Food Processing and Service Management of the College of Industrial Technology, Expanded Tertiary Education Equivalency and Accreditation Program ((ETEEAP) Internal Assessor, Senior Accreditor of the Accrediting Agency of Charter Colleges and Universities of the Philippines (AACCUP). She was once the Chief of the Quality Assurance of the university and Program Coordinator in Technology and Home Economics (THE) at the Graduate School of MMSU. She teaches FPSM in the undergraduate and THE & TVE in the graduate school.

She passed the Professional Board Licensure Examination for Teachers, Home Economics Extension Officer and the TVET Trainers Methodology course. She is also a national TVET Assessor in the following: Commercial Cooking NC III, Food Processing NC II, Cookery NC II, Bread and Pastry NC II and Housekeeping NC II.

Currently, she is involved in several research projects of the university like: Rediscovering the Ilocano fruit and vegetable-based recipes (DID) for Household Processing and Cultural Education Diversity for Local Community as Project Leader; Food Product Innovation for School-Based Enterprises: A CIT Niche Project as a Study Leader and Product Development of Bolinao Chicken. She pioneered the production of Malunggay-Based Products in the early 90’s. She has a deep passion of developing products that are locally available like Malunggay ice cream and other Malunggay-based products, assorted veggie-pickles, dragon fruit by-products, bamboo shoots, native chicken and eggs to name a few.

Recently, the native pickled eggs was awarded the Best Product Innovation (BEST ULAM) by the Commission on Higher Education in the SUC’s Expo 2020 in Trinoma, Quezon City. Likewise, the Malunggay-based recipes won First Place in the Dr. Edgar F. Padilla Award of the Ilocos Consortium for Industry and Energy Research Development in 2008. She was also a National Finalist in the Rice Race 2007, Search for All-Filipino Rice Beverage Competition by the PhilRice Research Institute, Science City, Nueva Ecija.

She pioneered in the use of Malunggay to improve health and nutrition. Her well-published research became a national scientific contribution. Dr. Valera’s articles were published in the S & T Journal, Philippine Home Economics Journal, Philippine Association of Technology and Home Economics of State Colleges and Universities (PATHESCU) Journal,  BIOLIFE magazines, TIMPUYOG Journal, Taraon, Raman and Ramen, Cooking with the Mayor and Bannawag.
