Biography

Ms. Araceli J. Badar is a graduate of BS in Biology and holding an Education Program Specialist I position. In line with her interest, she formally attended the Training Course on Tissue Culture, Indexing and Genetic Fidelity Testing of Garlic held at the Institute of Plant Breeding, College of Agriculture, UP Los Baños, College, Laguna on July 3 to 14, 2000.  From then on, Ms. Badar was involved in researches concerning micropropagation of high-value crops not only garlic but also banana and orchids as well. The  development of protocols for in vitro propagation and later nursery management techniques to produce clean planting materials for the aforementioned crops brought honor to MMSU because these won several recognition. In addition, two articles had been published recently in refereed journal namely: Development of a Multiplication Technique for Virus-free Garlic Planting Materials (S&T Journal, Volume 2) and Development of Low-cost and Rapid Multiplication Technique of Tissue-cultured Musa acuminate (AA Group) cv. ‘Lacatan’ Banana Seedlings. At present, Ms. Badar is working on Micropropagation of Breadfruit and Jackfruit.

Other researches Ms. Badar was involved is in line with Plant Genetic Resources. In 2008-2010, she was involved in SEARCA SFRT-funded project “Survey and Characterization of Indigenous Food Plants in Ilocos Norte, Philippines" wherein she co-authored and published a book “Survey and Characterization of Indigenous Food Plants in Ilocos Norte", Phil. Discussion Paper Series. SEARCA Los Baños, Laguna. 60 pp. in 2012.  One of the indigenous food plants (IFP) being identified and had been evaluated since the project was terminated is the traditional upland rice (TUR).  Ms. Badar and company began evaluating this crop since 2010 and of the first batch of 50 accessions, 6 were found to be adaptable in lower elevation upland ecosystem.
