Brief Description
Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 or Sustainable Cities and Communities Target 11.4 aims to protect the world’s cultural and natural heritage. Its main goal is to strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard it. Meanwhile, the Mariano Marcos State University Research and Development Agenda for 2024-2028 prioritizes projects on documenting Philippine indigenous knowledge, culture, and Heritage (URDA p. 22). This proposed project aims to contribute to the ongoing efforts and priority projects leading to cultural heritage preservation.
As is known, cultural heritage can be tangible or intangible. The intangible cultural heritage consists of oral traditions and history, among others, and is threatened to be permanently lost and altered without a mechanism for its preservation. Many studies in the Philippines have already explored and documented the vast oral tradition. However, few studies have focused on exploring the dallot, an impromptu native chant by the Ilokano community on special occasions.
In Ilocos Norte, 78-year-old Adelita Romualdo Bagcal is recognized as Manlilikha ng Bayan or national living treasure, for her extraordinary skill and dedication to reserving, performing, and promoting this oral tradition to the younger generation.
As the younger generation continuously loses interest in their cultural heritage, the documentation of these, especially those that are considered tacit knowledge (only in the head of a cultural bearer), is significantly relevant as it will provide opportunities for many more generations to learn in forms that they can appreciate.
This proposed study project aims to conduct two (3) studies:

This proposed study project aims to conduct two (3) studies:
- Study 1 – Exploring and Understanding a Cultural Bearer’s Lived Experiences
- Study 2 – Multimedia Production in ensuring Knowledge Sharing of Cultural Heritage
- Study 3 – Design of Knowledge Sharing Training for Cultural Heritage Preservation
The result of the study will be beneficial because it will ensure that culture will be sustained for future Filipinos to enjoy and appreciate. Understanding one’s culture is necessary because it is the foundation that could explain one’s identity – the Filipino identity that is unique and different from the others. It cannot be denied that the cultural heritage of a person’s identity can be transformed if there is no constant or valid repository and mechanism of one’s customs, practices, traditions, and even rituals that could be passed for posterity. Hence, this proposed study aims to resolve the serious
threat of cultural loss and degradation, contributing to the efforts to attain SDG 11, which aims to make cities and communities sustainable.

Expected Output
Publication
The proposed project aimsto increase the number of cultural and historical studies related to Ilokano culture, which is limited to this date. Additionally, not only a research publication but other media formats will be designed to share knowledge on cultural heritage, particularly the oral tradition of the dallot such as brochure. Additionally, a prototype in the form Sketches and Storyboards will be produced.
People Services
Since the project will produce and design multi-platform outputs, it can provide the public with a thorough understanding and appreciation of cultural heritage, such as oral tradition, that will spark their interest in preserving it. Generally, this proposed project will contribute to letting more people appreciate their cultural heritage and the importance of its preservation, as it can explain their identity.
Academic Impact
The study will impact the academe through the addition of the necessary knowledge on Ilokano cultural heritage. The project will provide the learners and educators of new resources with new perspectives on cultural heritage in Ilokano context.
Industry Competitiveness
The project can spark interest in various industries, incorporating activities that will help promote and preserve cultural heritage.
