June 26, 2022
In its aim to implement more creative, responsive, and relevant research and development programs, the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), through its Research Directorate (RD), conducted the 2022 Agency In-House Research Proposal Review (AIRPR) on June 21, 22, and 24.
A total of 50 research proposals were presented and evaluated during the hybridized review combining the in-person and virtual modes in two parallel sessions held at the NBERIC Conference Room and the ILAARRDEC One-Stop-Information Shop (OSIS) of the Crops Research Laboratory (CRL). Out of the 50 proposals submitted online via the Research Directorate Management Information System (RDMIS), nine are classified under the program level, 16 under the project level and 25 are standalone studies.
The evaluation was categorized into six different themes, with 20 panelists who scrutinized the merits of the presented research proposals. In his synthesis, Prof. John Paul Vallente, College of Teacher Education research coordinator and Secretariat chairperson, listed 26 under the humanities, social sciences, communication, and education research category reviewed in Session 1 held at the former venue. The proposals predominantly were about revitalizing, reinforcing, and enriching Ilokano traditions, culture, and identities, as well as exploring research variables that correlate with concepts on gender toward the development of gender-responsive frameworks.
Likewise, the 24 proposals presented in session 2 at the OSIS were categorized under natural resources conservation and management, tuklas lunas development, garlic and other agri-condiments, innovative materials and emerging application, and information technology. Generally, these proposals seek to optimize the utilization of natural resources in Ilocos Norte through employing innovative and creative scientific approaches toward strategic and sustainable production, transfer, and commercialization.
Earlier, during the opening program, Dr. Shirley C. Agrupis, university president, commended the Research Directorate for initiating the review, a mechanism for quality control of MMSU’s research undertakings, and challenged the MMSU faculty and full-time researchers to do research with an impact on the community and foster collaboration. Dr. Agrupis, likewise, gave her initial evaluation of the listed research proposals reviewed in the three-day event.
The evaluated proposals were in the capsulized form, and a detailed proposal will be required for those that fall within the university’s research priorities and are recommended for the 2023 implementation. The funding for the proposed research programs and projects will come from the MMSU’s general appropriations for research services. According to Dr. Bjorn S. Santos, Director of Research, the evaluation results will be released and notified to the proponents through their e-mail by July 4.
The AIHRPR provides faculty and full-time researchers from the different centers a platform where they can present their research proposals for potential funding and eventual implementation. In addition, it is conducted annually to provide support for the production and dissemination of information and content that shall be within the priority areas included in the University-wide R&D Agenda; foster collaboration among faculty and full-time researchers across disciplines; and enable faculty and full-time researchers to advance their research capabilities.
