Brief Description | After the productive fruiting, the plant senesce and stop bearing fruits for a while especially towards the dry season. Pruning the old vines is a way to renew and increase productive branches of the old stand of M. cochinchinensis (sugod-sugod). Furthermore, it will eradicate pests that harbor in the old plant. Different cutting heights will serve as treatments. Pruning. Prune the old vines measuring from the base of the plant up to the desired cutting height or according to its treatment. Discard the pruned vines and clean area of weeds then burn them. Cultivation/Raising beds. Cultivate plots especially the base of the plants. Beds will be raised to about 15 cm. Raising the beds will protect and keep the plants away from ground pests, excessive water from accumulating in the soil especially during wet season, to ensure that the plants get more air and sunlight. Fertilizer Application. After pruning apply organic fertilizer on the base of the plant at the rate of 0.75 kg per plant then incorporate them into the soil. Irrigation and Weeding. After fertilizer application water/irrigate the plants and at bi-weekly interval thereafter or as the need arises. Weeding will also be done when the need arises. Trellising/Vine Training. Trellis will be provided to train vines to go up. M. cochinchinensis (sugod-sugod) vines produce tendrils that grasp objects for support. These tendrils hold vines securely to the trellis, but they may need a little guidance to get them to get started. As soon as it will begin to vine and the first tendrils appear, gently guide the ends of the vines to the trellis. Resistant vines can be tied loosely to the trellis with plant ties to get them started up the trellis. Data Gathering. Data to be taken will be on vine length at different observation period, number of branches, days to 50% flowering and days to first harvest and yield and yield components. |
