Brief Description
The project will employ the survey/quadrat method in attaining the objectives of the study. These will consist of field work which will be done once a month per established station, and a laboratory work.
Major Activities/Workplan:
- Preliminary survey to establish collecting stations/study sites
- Monthly sampling for the inventory
- Bio-physical parameters determination
- Identification and classification of collected samples
- Wet and dry biomass determination
Goal 1: Complete taxonomic listing and population structure of Sargassum spp and products developed from Sargassum spp in Ilocos Norte
- Inventory and classify species of Sargassum spp in Ilocos Norte
- Assess seasonal variation and production of Sargassum spp
Goal 2: Utilization of Brown Seaweeds (Sargassum spp) in the waters off Ilocos Norte
Purpose:
- Develop food products from brown seaweeds (Sargassum)
- Determine the acceptability of the developed food products
- Establish nutritional facts
- Conduct shelf life testing
- Develop packaging of the food products
