Brief Description |
This is the Study 1 of the project "Documentation on the Phenology and Pests Occurrence of Major Crops Grown in Ilocos Norte".
The purpose of this study is to document long-term phenological data for climate change research and policy formulation so as to develop mitigation or adaptation strategies that is possible and practical.
Major activities include:
- Monitoring of perennial crops. Selected trees (red mombin, physic nut, mango, manila tamarind and Nauclea orientalis) that grow independently in at least three areas (Batac, Pasuquin, Bacarra, Pinili) will be used in the study. These trees will be monitored twice a week. Dates of phenological events such as flushing, flower induction, bud break, flowering, anthesis, fruit set and harvest/mature fruit, and number of leaf flushing per tree will be recorded with precision. The occurrence of pests which includes their life stages, relative abundance, and percent infection/damage at vegetative (number of shoots infected with the emerging pests, % infection, etc.) and flowering and fruiting (number of fruits infected with the emerging pests, % infection, etc) stages will be likewise recorded.
- Climatic data. Daily climatic data consisting of minimum and maximum temperatures, relative humidity, wind speed, precipitation, and adverse weather condition will be obtained from the 2 weather stations of Ilocos Norte (MMSU-PAGASA Agrometeorological station and Laoag Synoptic station).
- Data analysis. Data gathered will be summarized and analyzed using appropriate statistical tools.
