Dr. Jocelyn A. Bernabe is a graduate of Doctor of Philosophy in Agronomy major in Crop Physiology with cognate in Soil Science from the University of the Philippines, Los Baños College, Laguna. She completed her Master of Agriculture major in Crop Science and cognate in Soil Science as well as her Bachelor of Science in Agriculture major in Crop Science from the Mariano Marcos State University, City of Batac, Ilocos Norte.
She is presently an Associate Professor 1, designated as the Program Coordinator of the College of Agriculture, Food & Sustainable Development (CAFSD), Dingras Campus. She is also the National Pigeonpea Program Coordinator and at the same time, the In charge of the Seed and Gene Bank located at the Crop Research Laboratory. In addition, being one of the experts of the pigeonpea crop, she is one of the Evaluators of the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR) ICRISAT Legumes (pigeonpea) Projects. Aside from these designations, she is the Internal Assessor in Agriculture of the University’s Expanded Tertiary Education Equivalency and Accreditation Program (ETEEAP).
She is an active member of the Field Legumes Technical Working Group of the National Seed Industry Council (FLTWG-NSIC); the Philippine Association of Agriculturists (PAA); the International Southeast Asian Agricultural Sciences Society (ISAASS); International Crop Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) researchers; and Cereals and Legumes Asia Network (CLAN).
Her qualifications were results of scholarships extended by various institutions which were all competitive. Her graduate studies were completed thru scholarships not only by the University’s Manpower Development Program, but also by the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (the first PhD Graduate of their Scholarship program); Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR) (thesis support); and National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) (thesis writing support).
She was also sponsored by various international agencies to attend international trainings, workshops and conferences. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) sponsored her to attend the Group Training Course:Vegetable Seed Production in Tsukuba, Japan (1995); the Netherlands Fellowship Program for her attendance to the International Course on Seed Production and Seed Technology in Wageningen, the Netherlands (2000); the International Agricultural Center in Collaboration with the General Netherlands Inspection Services and Department of Agricultural Extension-Thailand for her attendance to the Participatory Plant Breeding and Support of Local Seed Supply in Chiang Mai, Thailand (2004); and the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics with the PCAARRD sponsored her to attend two programs: First International Training Course on Pigeonpea Improvement and Seed Production (2011); and the International Course on Pigeonpea Phenotyping (2012).
She is a full time faculty member at the CAFSD Dingras campus and an Affiliate faculty of the Graduate School teaching Crop improvement, Crop Physiology, Plant Breeding and Soil Science subjects. Aside, she is a faculty researcher conducting several research programs/projects/studies. She has completed several research studies and had publications both local and international. To date, in addition to her National Cooperative Trials ongoing, she is conducting two special programs/projects funded by PCAARRD: Accelerating pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) adoption, production and utilization in northern Philippines; and Enhancing peanut (Arachis hypogeae) production and processing with projects Enhanced capacity building and Integrated Pest management and Boron management projects, respectively.
