Brief Description | This project is composed of: Study 1: Documentation and Morphological Characterization of the Philippine Native Chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) Strains in Ilocos Norte Study 2: Benchmark Information on Native Pig Production Management Practices in Ilocos Norte Study 3: Documentation on the Indigenous Uses of the Native Animals In this project, characterization will be done with the use of interview schedule and the production management will be documented. The result of the survey on the morphological characteristics on the strains of chicken and breeds of pigs as well as the production management practices employed by raisers will be the basis for intervention strategies to improve the stocks of farmer raisers. Intervention can be through breeding to improve phenotypically the strains, improve production management practices (e.g. feeding, housing) and product development using the existing stocks. A. Native Chicken and Pig The study will be conducted in selected towns of Ilocos Norte. This will focus on towns with most number of native animals raised particularly chicken and pig. The information needed will be gathered from the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) and the Municipal Agriculture Offices of Ilocos Norte. The study will use the descriptive survey research design. An interview schedule will be prepared and this will serve as the instrument in gathering the necessary primary data and information. Farmer raisers will be interviewed from the purposively selected towns of Ilocos Norte. The basis for selection will be the number of native animals raised which will be provided by the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics or the Department of Agriculture Municipal level or the concern barangay. Descriptive analysis such as mean, frequencies and percentages will be used to describe the demographic profile of the respondents, strains of native chicken and their feeding and housing management practices. B. Recipes Interview schedule will be used to gather data on the different recipes commonly cooked by raisers and also the different uses like "Atang" and others. The different recipes will be enhanced to preserve and can be commercialized. The project will run for at least three (3) years. Survey will be conducted during the 1st year and formulation, enhanced, microbial and nutrition facts, and packaging and labeling of recipes will be for the remaining two years. |
Expected Output | Brochure of existing strains of Philippine native chicken and pig in Ilocos Norte, feeding, housing and production management practices, and marketing options. Results will be the basis of formulating research proposals toward the development of potential native chicken and pig production in the region particularly in Ilocos Norte. |
