Brief Description | Proponents:
The study was conducted in dragon fruit growing municipalities in the province. The study used both the quantitative and qualitative analyses. The Quantitative analysis will be used in describing the demographic and socio-economic profile. Moreover, it applied in analysing the variables on assessment such as dragon fruit farm profile, reasons for planting dragon fruit, adoption of dragon fruit technology, marketing practices, costs and return analysis, value adding practices, and issues and concerns of the dragon fruit industry. For the qualitative analysis, this was used for cases highlighting the best practices on dragon fruit production in the province. An interview schedule was prepared for the quantitative analysis. The questionnaire was divided into two major parts. Part 1 investigated the profile of the dragon fruit growers specifically on their socio-demographic; and economic characteristics. Part II looked into the assessment of the dragon fruit industry in the province considering the dragon fruit growers' farm profile as to: a) reasons for planting dragon fruit; b) level of adoption of dragon fruit technology; c) marketing practices; and d) value adding practices. For the qualitative approach, a guide question was prepared specifically for those showing exemplary performance in there dragon fruit farms. Their best practices were documented. The respondents of the study were the dragon fruit growers in the province. However, only those with 50 or more poles were included and which had started planting dragon fruit since 2000. Specifically, the unit of analysis was the grower fruit grower or farmer. The population of the study composed of dragon fruit growers in Ilocos Norte. The list was obtained from the Office of the Provincial Agriculture (OPAG), Laoag City. Only those growers with 50 posts and more were considered. From the total of 248 growers with 50 posts or more, half (50%) or 125 was considered sample size. However, during the data gathering period, only 83 respondents were interviewed. This is because some of those listed are only farm keepers and not the real owners and refused to answer since they claimed they do not know the real operation of the farms. Others do not want to be interviewed. Data were collected by trained enumerators supervised by the research staff. Datat will be descriptively analyzed using frequency counts, means, and percentages. A correlation analysis will be used to assess the relationship of variables. All the data needed in the study were already collected. These were encoded and data are being tabulated. The research team will meet and discuss on the division of labor on the analysis and discussion of the tabulated data. Likewise, from the data analyzed, the dragon fruit growers who showed exemplary performance in the management of their farm will be selected to be further interviewed on their best practices. The team will also prepare the guide question for the in-depth interview of these dragon fruit growers. from: 2015 Agency In-house Review |
