Brief Description
Hermeneutics is a member of the social subjectivist paradigm where meaning is intersubjectively created, in contrast to the empirical universe of assumed scientific realism (Barthon et. al. 2002). As part of the interpretative research family, it focuses on the importance of an aspect of reality. It focuses on defining shared linguistic meaning for a representation or symbol.

This study will be exploring the meaning of the hymns and marches of Ilocos Norte. Since hermeneutics posits the linguistic meaning and is likely to open infinite interpretation and reinterpretation (Marshall et. al. 2001), this study will be guided by the hermeneutics' co-existing principle to assure rigorous interpretative analysis:

  1. understanding the subject according to its social and historical context
  2. assessing the historical social construction between the researcher and the subject
  3. relating ideographic details to general theoretical concepts through abstraction and generalization
  4. being sensitive to potential pre-conceptual theoretical contradictions between research design and actual findings
  5. being aware of possible multiple interpretations among participants for a given sequence of events,
  6. being conscious of potential biases or systematic distortions in the subject's narratives (Klein et al. 1999)
This study will focus only on the towns of Ilocos Norte with hymns and/or marches. It will also unravel the history of these composed hymns and marches. Moreover, it will closely look into the cultural underpinnings of the hymns and marches and the meanings of the musical pieces.

Significance:
  1. This study will preserve the cultural heritage of the locality.
  2. The outcome of this study will contribute to the enrichment of the existing documents that serve as evidence to the cultural heritage of Ilocos Norte.
  3. The historical data can be used as part of discussion of Ilocano culture and traditions. Likewise, this can serve as a resource material for educators particularly in music and history.
  4. This will extensively contribute to the continuing development of music in the country.
Conceptual Framework:
This research will be anchored on the Hermeneutics Theory in analyzing the hymns and marches of Ilocos Norte. While this theory looks into understanding the subject according to its social and historical context and assessing the historical and social construction between the creator and the subject, this study will only be focusing on the cultural underpinnings of the hymns and marches. The researchers will be looking into the closest interpretation of the texts based on the clues provided solely from the text and key informants.

Methodology:
  1. Document analysis
  2. Interviews
  3. Focused Group Discussions
Plan of Work:
  1. Interview Tourism Council Officers (Expected Output: Data of towns with Hymns and Marches)
  2. Collection of Hymns and Marches (Expected Output: Copies of Hymns and Marches)
  3. Gathering of Related Literature (Expected Output: RRLs)
  4. Decoding Phase and Analysis (Expected Output: Analysis of the Hymns and Marches)
  5. Validation of the Historical Social Construction of the Hymns and Marches (Expected Outputs: Validated Historical Social Construction of the Hymns and Marches)
  6. Working on the Musical Notation (Expected Outputs: Musical Notation for the Hymns and Marches)
Expected Output
  • Publishable paper will be prepared.
  • Papers/Posters for presentation in national and international conferences will be submitted to organizing bodies
  • Technical report will be sent to CHED for appreciation
  • Papers (in journal form) will be submitted for publication in research and practitioner journals
