Status: Completed
Duration:
January 1, 2014 -
June 30, 2016
Brief Description
This study is under the project "Increasing Wet Season Production of Solanaceous Vegetables Through Improved Cultural Management Practices".
Planting of intercrops provides diversity in farm products thereby giving an alternative source of income to farmers. Intercrops are also used as barrier to the main crop whenever there is strong wind or typhoons. In addition, it also serves as trap crop/alternate host to some insect pests.
Main crops to be used in this study will be eggplant, tomato, and pepper. Crops to be used as intercrop will be corn, winged bean and pole sitao. Treatments will vary on the ratio of the number of rows of the maincrop and the intercrops.
Aside from the growth and yield data, the prevalence of pests will be monitored regularly. In addition, cost and return analysis will be done to determine the economic feasibility of each treatment.
Major activities include:
- Land preparation, lay-outing, seedbed preparation, seed sowing and maintenance of seedlings; preparation of planting materials
- Field establishment (planting/transplanting, mulching, application of fertilizer, etc)
- Care and maintenance (irrigation, trellising, weeding, etc)
- Data gathering and harvesting
- Consolidation of data, statistical analysis and interpretation
- Technical report writing and presentation
