Brief Description
This project is composed of three studies:

1. Documentation of the Leading Diseases in the Province of Ilocos Norte

Documentation and identification of the top/leading diseases in the Province of Ilocos Norte are being done. Data of the morbidity and mortality rates are gathered from the different RHU's in the locality. In consonance, weather data are collected from PAGASA stations. The sets of data are analyzed for their association/relationship using time-series analysis tools.

2. Distribution/Occurrence of the Leading Diseases in Ilocos Norte

The study is being conducted in the Province of Ilocos Norte. It seeks to map out and see the distribution/occurrence of the leading diseases as well as geographically locate the different RHU's, hospitals and other medical institution in the Province. Further a database of the different diseases, weather data, medical institutions is being developed in unison.

3. Documentation of the Traditional and Conventional (Indigenous Knowledge) Health Practices with Regard to Weather Extreme

Documentation and identification of the community folks' indigenous knowledge/know how is fundamental in our struggle to address the negative effects of climate change. Community folks will be interviewed to elicit information regarding their usual practices in dealing with extreme weather conditions. The data gathered will somehow supplement with the directives currently implementing by WHO with regards to climate change.

Expected Output
Study 1:

  • The leading/top diseases and ailments that had afflicted the people of Ilocos Norte for the last 10 years are identified and properly documented
  • Association or the relationship between weather and diseases are analyzed
  • Result of the study disseminated to the municipalities concerned for the education campaign (information dissemination) and for policy formulation
  • Measures and strategies should be produced to prevent and address disease outbreaks
Study 2:
  • The spatial distribution/occurrences of the different diseases particularly the cardiovascular and the respiratory diseases and/or the causes of morbidity and mortality are known
  • Risk maps are produced and generated - wherein diseases (last 10 years/monthly/daily occurrences) will be mapped out in every municipality of the Province according to morbidity and mortality rates.
  • Database of the different diseases along with the weather data (temperature, rainfall, relative humidity) are developed: analysis tool programmed to see the link/association between climate and diseases
  • RHU's and other medical institutions are also mapped out geographically: to be used as a tool in assessing if theres's enough institutions that could service the populace specially in the event of disease outbreaks
  • Information dissemination materials are produced (leaflets, brochures, journals, etc)
Study 3:
  • Indigenous knowledge of the community folks with regard to weather extreme is produced.
  • Adaptation and mitigation strategies are formulated
  • Production of brochures, leaflets and other infomaterials
  • Results of the study copy furnished to every municipality
