Biography

Dr. Charlie Bumanglag Batin finished his PhD and MS in Forestry at the University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB) in 2021 and 2010, respectively. His academic journey was realized through the scholarship support of the South East Asia Regional Center for Graduate Study in Agriculture (SEARCA) based in UPLB, Los Banos, Laguna. He studied various responses of agricultural crops in a bamboo-based agroforestry system for his dissertation while the potential of Jatropha curcas L. as a source of biodiesel for his master’s study. Dr. Batin specializes in silviculture and forest influences, agroforestry, social forestry, forest ecology and bamboo. Currently, he teaches various forestry subjects in the Department of Forestry, College of Agriculture, Food and Sustainable Development (CAFSD). At present, he is the Bamboo Program Leader of the university and the Program Coordinator of the ASEAN-Russia Project titled “Design and Development of ASEAN-Russia Interactive Communication Network for the Exchange of Innovative Technologies on Sustainable Agricultural Development”.

With his passion in teaching, he was tapped by Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry (TUAF) and International School of Thai Nguyen University (IS-TNU) as Visiting Professor for the past few years. Aside from teaching, Dr. Batin is also passionate in conducting various researches related to forestry and environment. His completed researches have been presented in various scientific conferences in the country and in other Asian countries such as Indonesia, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, China and Japan. He was also given an opportunity to work with competent senior researchers and scientists not only in the country but also in some Asian countries.  Recently, he just completed his research training course on forest ecology at the Forest Ecology Laboratory, National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, Taiwan last March 2017 sponsored by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). In July 2010, he was chosen to undertake a research training at the National Center of Genetic Engineering and Biochemistry (BIOTEC) at Pathumtani, Thailand which further enhanced his expertise in research undertakings. Some of his scientific works had been accepted in refereed and non-refereed journals which brought honor and prestige to the university. Dr. Batin also served as manuscript reviewer in international journals such as the International Journal on Arid Land Research and Management (ALRM) and the International Journal on Renewable Energy Research (JRER). He was also a research reviewer of Manila Central University (MCU) based in Caloocan, Manila.

As bamboo advocate, Dr. Batin is very passionate in extending bamboo technologies to various clienteles in the province and even to neighboring provinces. He is often invited by government and private institutions as resource speaker on bamboo production, nursery establishment and management, rehabilitation, bamboo stand management and harvesting. He leads several bamboo projects funded by the university and other external funding institutions which earned numerous recognitions and awards in the local, regional and national level. Through his bamboo initiatives, he was awarded in 2015 as the “Most Outstanding Extension Worker”.

As forester by profession, there are many things that I want to accomplish not for myself but for the people. I want to inculcate in their minds that living with nature comes with responsibility and commitment, and it always start from us. What the future brings depend on what we are doing today.
