MMSU reaps awards at the 2nd joint Regional Research, Development and Innovation Symposium

The Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) brought home significant awards in various categories from the just concluded 2nd Joint Regional Research, Development, and Innovation Symposium (RRDIS) held November 13-15 at J&V Hotel and Resort, City of San Fernando, La Union.
The symposium, which carried the theme "Fostering Synergy for Sustainable Development: Collaborative Research and Innovation across Industries, Agriculture, Fisheries, Health, and Local Governance," highlighted plenary sessions, research papers presentations, and posters and technology pitches, showcasing groundbreaking innovations and solutions to regional challenges.
The Ilocos Consortium for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (ICIEERD) hosted the RRDIS this year in collaboration with the City Government of San Fernando, La Union. It featured two parallel sessions: the ILAARRDEC's 36th Regional Symposium on R&D Highlights and the ICIEERD's 5th Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development Symposium and Competition, where MMSU had entries in both sessions.
MMSU secured five awards in three categories under the ILAARRDEC session. For the research paper category, the paper "Boosting garlic (Allium sativum L.) productivity through planting density and nutrient management optimization," authored by Dionisio S. Bucao, Evangeline Galacgac, Ryan James Pascual, Christian Butch Andrew Balbas, Kyle Cedric Dadoy, and Jilves I. Jimenez got first place award. In addition, the paper of Jimmbeth Zenil Fabia, Ma. Joy Theresa Agcaoili, Ryan James Pascual, Suerte Baranda, Arc Josam Racho, Marvielyn Olivar, Grace Shiela Jalani, Dionisio S. Bucao, Shirley C. Agrupis, and Peter James I. Gann titled "Assessment of probiotic characteristics of Lentilactobacillus hilgardii LH500 using in vitro and in silico approaches" was third place.
For poster presentation category, the entry of Jocelyn A. Bernabe, Ana Grace P. Gali, and Christian D. Dela Cruz titled "Varietal Development, Evaluation, and Maintenance of Legumes" was third place, while for the accompanying poster of a research paper category, MMSU got the first place for its poster titled "From Sea to Salt: Discovering the Salt-Making Practices in the Philippines," authored by Nathaniel R. Alibuyog, Rodel T. Utrera, Sherlyn B. Nicolas, Cristina D. Valentin, Willen Mark D. Manzanas, Floramante C. Pastor, Joemel G. Agreda, Julius Jonar L. Butay, Lea C. Agbigay, Constante B. Julian, Josefa L. Pugat, Roxanne Joy Opelac, Shaira Camille Santos, Ma. Concepcon Birginias, Lord Ian R. Galano, Marinique A. Guerrero, Nelson Junior T. Rodillas, Nadine Sharinette R. Bravo, Augustine B. Quidilla, Maricone A. Cabansag, Rex B. Basuel, Andie John D. Tadeo and Janice M. Baysa.
The undergraduate thesis "Investigation of Urban Heat Island Intensity in Northern Luzon Philippines Using the Weather Research and Forecasting Model," by Camille Rafal, was third place in the best undergraduate thesis competition.
Under the ICIEERD session, MMSU garnered four awards in the professional and student categories. The team of Buchard B. Cutin, John Christian A. Arrogante, Rhoda T. Garcia, Efren T. Renon, Jr., John Christian A. Arrogante, Johnmel A. Valerozo, and Eleazer O. Grande captured first place in the paper competition professional category for their paper "Process and Product Optimization of Black Garlic used as Flavor Enhancer. Also, the team of Arlene Mia Rugian, Gayea Hyun, and Jeon Seokwoo got the third spot in the same category for their paper "Fabrication and Use of Alumina with Periodic Pore Network to Support Nickel Nanoparticles for Methane Reforming."
For the poster presentation professional category, the MMSU's entry titled "Simulated Flood Extent in the Laoag Padsan River Basin at Different Return Methods" by Ma. Gloann Leizel Longboy, Nathaniel Alibuyog, Queenie Rose Calaranan, Rodel Utrera and Floramante Pastor was adjudged third place.
For the paper competition student category, the thesis, "Characterization of Hydroxyapatite Extracted from Waste Cow Bone" by Asteryssaphire M. Cabulisan, also captured third place.
The RRDIS is a collaborative initiative of four consortia in Region 1: the ICIEERD, the Region 1 Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC), the Sustainability, Innovation, Leadership, Linkages, Access, and Growth (SILLAG) Consortium, and the Ilocos Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium (ILAARRDEC) where MMSU is the base agency.
