Eighteen researchers and farm workers of the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) participated in a hands-on training on the operation and management of the newly constructed greenhouse located within the RDE complex on May 13, 2025.
The training was facilitated by Mr. Jed Paculanang of Turbulent Partners, Inc., the project contractor, as part of the facility's turnover process. Participants were introduced to the basic functions and systems of the greenhouse, including crop-specific management strategies aimed at maximizing productivity and research efficiency.
The P2.2-million facility, measuring 10 meters by 6 meters with a height of 6.1 meters, is a state-of-the-art structure equipped with combined mechanical and natural ventilation systems. It also features an integrated planting system divided into three specialized bays for soilless cultivation, hydroponics, and soil-based planting. These advanced features are expected to boost crop research efforts, especially in controlled environment agriculture.
The construction of the smart agriculture facility is part of the university’s initiatives under the Higher Education Reform and Innovation Program (HERIP). This project seeks to strengthen research and innovation capacity, provide immersive learning opportunities for students, and enhance the competencies of faculty and staff.
A follow-up training session is scheduled on May 20, focusing on the preparation of planting solutions to further capacitate the research team in managing soilless and hydroponic systems.
With this new facility and continuing capacity-building efforts, MMSU reinforces its commitment to advancing agricultural research and education in the region. (LCA)
