A full-time researcher participated as a paper presenter in the recently conducted 2023 Rural Women’s Studies Association (RWSA) Triennial Conference, held at Arkansan State University in Jonesboro, Arkansas, USA, on May 15-19, 2024. Dr. Susan G. Aquino, an education program specialist II, presented her research, co-authored by Dr. Zenaida Agngarayngay, titled “Spatio-Temporal Analysis in Seaweed Gathering and Marketing in Selected Coastal Areas in Ilocos Norte, Philippines.”
Dr. Aquino’s research highlights the gender roles in seaweed gathering and marketing in selected coastal areas of Ilocos Norte, Philippines, highlighting how women are confined to less risky, nearby zones while men venture into more distant, hazardous areas. By mapping out these activities and their changes over time, the research provides a valuable framework for sustainable seaweed management and marketing practices. This framework is important for empowering rural women, who play a significant role in this industry.
The RWSA is an international association for the advancement and promotion of farm and rural women’s gender studies from a historical perspective. It sponsors a triennial conference that gathers scholars and activists worldwide to share research and advocacy on rural women, genders, and sexualities. This year’s conference was hosted by Arkansas State University with the theme “Gendered advocacy and activisms, shaping institutions and communities”.
