The project team of Mariano Marcos State University Phil-LiDAR attended the 4th National Remote Sensing Conference sponsored by Philippine Geosciences and Remote Sensing Society last August 28-29 at the University of the Philippines Environmental Science and Meteorology Institute.
Various institutions and organizations from academe, private, and government agencies presented their studies including Dr. Nathaniel R. Alibuyog, MMSU project leader concerning Remote Sensing relevant to Phil-LiDAR project and serve as learning avenue for the project staff for the efficient execution of the project.
The invitation of the LiDAR project team is to give the staff knowledge on the utilization of Remote Sensing on the different activities included in the project. Through the topics presented by the speakers, the team were provided benchmark information on the use of remote sensing in agriculture, risk management, and innovation that is useful in the LiDAR project.
The symposium primarily aimed to present and discuss remote sensing programs in the country; agriculture and natural resources monitoring; risk management and climate change; and new space science initiatives.
Part of the program is Dr. Eric Paringi’s presentation from the Department of Geodetic Engineering, UP Diliman presented the DREAM-LiDAR under Project NOAH highlighting the LiDAR 1 which focuses on Geohazzard mapping for the entire Philippines. LiDAR analyzes the reflected light from the earth surface when an instrument on-board on a plane beams out light to map the Digital Surface Model (DSM) and Digital Terrain Model (DTM) of the Philippines. The algorithm being used requires the help of 14 SUCs and HEIs for the validation of LiDAR data. The project aims to give people early warning hours before the flooding occurs so as to attain zero casualties.

The team composed of Dr. Alibuyog, MMSU project leader, and four science research specialists namely Cristine Bumanglag, Richard Dean Yadao, Benedict Castro, and Ma. Camille Gonzales.
