Brief Description
This research project is designed to identify and document the location of superior mother trees of dipterocarps and other indigenous timber species in Ilocos Norte and evaluate the phenotypic qualities and phenology of these trees. Preliminary data will be gathered through personal interview from key informants, particularly those involve in seedling production, both from the private and government sectors. The geographical location of potential mother trees will be recorded while the phenotypic characteristics will be assessed through physical measurements and ocular inspection.

The phenological events, i.e., leaf flush initiation, leaf flush completion, leaf fall initiation, leaf fall completion, leafless period, initiation of flowering, completion of flowering, time lag between start of vegetative (first leaf flush) and reproductive (first-visible flower) phases, initiation of fruiting, completion of fruiting, fruit-fall initiation and completion of fruit fall will be assessed and recorded monthly. This will be used in designing a phenology calendar of the selected superior mother trees. The geophysical characteristics and climatic factors will be determined.

The project will be implemented with the following component studies:

Sty 1. Inventory and assessment of superior mother trees of dipterocarps and premium indigenous timber species in Ilocos Norte

Sty 2. Phenological assessment of selected dipterocarps and premium indigenous timber species in Ilocos Norte

Expected Output
  1. Identified and properly marked superior mother trees that will serve as source of quality germplasm for quality planting stock production.
  2. Adequate supply of phenotypically and genetically superior planting materials.
  3. Information on phenology calendar of selected superior mother trees of dipterocarps and timber indigenous species.
  4. High quality germplasm that will provide higher financial benefits for nursery propagators and stakeholders.
  5. Seed calendar of some forest trees to serve as guide for the seed collection period.
  6. Database information on the phenotypic characteristics and phenological events of superior mother of dipterocarps and premium indigenous timber species in Ilocos Norte.
  7. Location maps of the selected mother trees for each species.
