Brief Description
This project will be implemented with three component studies/activities. Generally, the project aimed to develop propagation protocol using seed, wildlings and stem cuttings as planting material of 5 selected dipterocarps and other indigenous timber species found in Ilocos Norte. Among the cultural treatments that will be established in using seed as planting material includes the appropriate pre-sowing treatments, potting media, nutrient and water requirements, and hardening methods. For wildlings, different rooting hormone applications, potting media, fertilizer rates and application, water frequency and hardening off practices will be evaluated in each individual species. In vegetative propagation using stem cuttings study will evaluate the effect of different rooting hormone applications, period of collecting and size of stem cuttings, rooting media, potting media, nutrient and watering frequency. The experimental plants will be applied with the basic requirement in the nursery and will be exposed with various intervening factors such as varied agro-climatic conditions and pest. The effects of the treatments will be assessed based on the survival rate, morphological characters (height growth, stem diameter, root collar diameter, number of leaves),  root growth potential (number of new roots and length of roots) and quality index. In addition to the growth parameters, pre-germination characteristics will also be determined for seed-grown planting materials.

The project will be implemented with three component activities/studies as follows:

Sty 1. Development of propagation protocols of selected dipterocarps and other indigenous timber species using wildlings as planting materials

Sty 2. Development of nursery techniques of seed-grown dipterocarps and other indigenous timber species

Sty 3. Development and evaluation of nursery techniques of selected dipterocarps and other indigenous timber species using stem cuttings

Expected Output
  1. Optimum conditions for increased survival and growth of planting stocks using seed, wildlings and stem cuttings as planting material
  2. Cost effective propagation techniques of dipterocarps and other indigenous timber species using wildlings, seed and stem cuttings as planting material
  3. Good quality and quantity planting stocks for the establishment of clonal garden and enrichment planting of forest areas
  4. Sufficient superior clones for the massive propagation of quality planting materials
  5. IEC materials such as brochures, information bulletin and publication in journals
