Category: Study

Status: Completed

Duration: January 1, 2008 - December 31, 2015

Brief Description

This study is under the project "Varietal Improvement in Eggplant".

Different varieties of eggplant taken from the Institute of Plant Breeding, Los BaƱos Laguna will be screened through series of evaluation and promising lines will be selected and recommended for wet season planting. Since the project aims to harness heterosis, the varieties that performed well during wet season will be improved in terms of productivity and develop hybrids which can outperform the parental lines, hence this study.

Major activities include:

  1. Hybridization activities
  2. Evaluation and screening of different F1 hybrids
  3. Evaluation of promising F1 hybrid
  4. Evaluation of the top 3 promising hybrid for wet and dry season planting on station
  5. Evaluation of the top 3 promising hybrid for wet season planting in farmers field

Expected Output

  1. Horticultural and fruit characteristics will be taken during the third harvesting. Characterization will be based on the Descriptors List of Eggplant by the International Board for Plant Genetic Resources (IBPGR) 1990.
  2. Yield and yield components like fruit size, number of fruits/kg, marketable and non-marketable fruits will be recorded.
  3. Farmers preference through visual evaluation in the field.
  4. Acceptability rating and preference by consumers through taste test.
  5. Pest incidence and damage rating will be taken at different plant growth stages of the plant using a rating scale.
  6. Weather data during the cropping season like rainfall, relative humidity, temperature and tropical cyclones that hit the area during the experimental period will be taken from MMSU-PAGASA Agromet Station.
