Brief Description
This study is under the project "Institutionalizing a Sustainable Fruit Crops Germplasm Collection and Commercialization for Climatic Change Adaptation, Biodiversity Conservation, Health Promotion, Agri-Ecotourism and Income Generation".

Mechanics of Implementation:

1. A fruit crops genebank will be established/maintained which is a part of: a) a biodiversity park; b) an agri-ecotourism genebank; c) part of the landscape of buildings; and d) regular genebank.

Ex situ genebank was established at the MMSU Forest Reserve at Lubbot, Batac City, Ilocos Norte with an area of 5 ha. Other vacant areas around buildings and farms of the University including those in Payao forest reserve, MMSU, Batac City form part of the ex situ genebank. These form as part of the landscape and the Biodiversity Park of MMSU which also serve as a show window of different fruit crop varieties for students and the community.

2. The fruit crops germplasm will consist of the following: a) registered varieties with the National Seed Industry Council adapted in the region; b) elite and promising fruit crops; and c) minor or indigenous fruit crops adapted in the region.

A total of 70 different fruit accessions/varieties of 19 fruit crops had been planted and maintained at various locations at MMSU, Batac City. Additional important fruit crop selections will be collected as deemed necessary.

3. The fruit crops germplasm will be laid out as an agri-ecotourism site: a) amenities of an eco-tourism site will be provided and b) the fruit crops diversity, fruits and health products from the germplasm shall be developed and serve as an attraction.

Expected Output
