The research paper, Adaptability of Registered Garlic Varieties in Regions 1, 2, And CAR, of MMSU researchers is one of the four Best Paper finalists in the Downstream Category of the 2nd Plant Science Associations of the Philippines (FPSAP) Scientific Conference held on 1-2 September 2021.
Authored by Dr. Dionisio S. Bucao, Ms. Marissa I. Atis, Ms. Noralyn B. Legaspi, Ms. Evangeline S. Galacgac, and Mr. Jilves I. Jimenez of the Research Directorate, the study focused on identifying potential expansion area for garlic production to meet the garlic demand in the country.
Themed Agricultural Resilience in the New Normal Through Cutting Edge Plant Science, the conference highlights researches of various research institutions in oral paper presentation and poster competition. The conference was held virtually via Zoom on September 1-2, 2021, holding the paper presentation as one of the highlights of the first day of the conference.
“As MMSU banners its studies in initiatives for the garlic industry, our research builds its profundity in the promise of these registered garlic varieties to supply the market demand and reduce importation dependence of the country”, Dr. Bucao, shared.
In this adaptability trial, five registered garlic varieties, namely the Ilocos Pink, locos White, Mexican, miracle, and Tan Bolters were tried in different locations in Regions 1, 2, and 3 and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), particularly in the northern parts of Ilocos Norte, provinces of Cagayan, Kalinga, Isabela, Nueva Viscaya, Benguet, and Abra. Result of the study Findings of the study indicate that the provinces of Cagayan, Kalinga, Isabela, Nueva Viscaya, Benguet, and Abra are favorable areas for garlic production using specific varieties which can ensure the increase in sufficiency level of this commodity in the country.
The paper was presented by Dr. Bucao. He was joined by three other finalists, including Ms. Rona Kay Franco in their study on Extending the Shelf life of Guava (Psidium guajava L.cv. Queso de Bola) fruits during Retails through Modified Atmosphere Packaging, Mr. Jesse Descalsota with Site Specific Nutrient Management: A Way of Improving Crop Productivity and Farmer’s Profitability in the Country; and Mr. Alvin Palanog on Salient Perspective in Breeding for High Zinc and Grain Yield in Rice.
The FPSAP has four member organizations namely” Crop Science Society, Philippine Association of Plant Tissue Culture and Biotechnology, Philippine Fruits Association, and Philippine Seed Industry Association.
