RD director delivers plenary lecture at 28th FPSAP scientific conference

By: Lea C. Agbigay

Dr. Dionisio S. Bucao, MMSU Research director, was among the plenary speakers at the 28th Scientific Conference of the Federation of Plant Science Associations of the Philippines (FPSAP), held on August 26–28, 2025, at the Cebu Parklane International Hotel.

Invited by FPSAP President Dr. Lavernee S. Gueco, Dr. Bucao presented the topic “Garlic and Other Condiments: The Gem of the North,” which highlighted the cultural heritage and economic potential of garlic, branding it as a ‘gem’ of  Northern Philippines. He underscored the region’s dominance in garlic production while emphasizing persistent production challenges such as low yields due to pests and climate change, as well as weak value chains. Dr. Bucao also featured in his talk the MMSU-led initiatives that include land suitability mapping, crop improvement, village-scale storage facilities, and black garlic product development. These science-based solutions, he noted, are helping farmers increase productivity and tap into the health and wellness markets.

A multi-awarded soil and crop researcher, Dr. Bucao has spearheaded garlic research and development (R&D) since 2017, producing Scopus-indexed publications, land suitability maps, and policy papers that have been adopted by the Regional Development Council. His leadership has also mobilized more than Php 307.7 million in external research funding, establishing Region I’s first NICER program and leading a Php 250 million CHED-funded initiative to strengthen academia–industry partnerships, innovation, and food security in the Ilocos region.

The FPSAP is a national network of professional plant science organizations dedicated to advancing research, education, and development in plant science for sustainable agriculture.  With this year’s theme “Plant Science Innovations for Sustainable Solutions in Agriculture, Health and Nutrition,” the biennial conference convened researchers, academicians, and professionals from across the country to share advances in plant science research and promote sustainable development.
